Growing into Year 3- Reflections & What Is to Come!

Caregivers of Mother Earth was officially designated as a 501(c)(3) organization on 02/22/2022. Just yesterday, I remember looking at the date and commenting that it must be a sign that we will be working together with other partners. True to form, we have been able to achieve so much in three years because of wonderful partners with aligned missions.

Hendersonville, NC becomes first Caregivers of Mother Earth City:

From the early days, making connections with the City of Hendersonville and the Sustainability Board, we have said yes to sponsoring the inaugural Hendo Earth Fest in 2023 and subsequent years in 2024 and 2025. Continuing to work with the city, we supported the revitalization of an overgrown lot, untended for years, into a thriving garden for community residents and perhaps even a model for other city garden projects.

ECO Kids School Gardens:

The key to success throughout our three years is collaboration. Working with AJ Whittenberg Elementary School of Engineering and the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club in Greenville, SC, we came together to create a sustainable recipe to ensure the garden continues to live without dependence on any one individual. The leadership team members have come and gone but the garden lives on and each season it’s the children from the two organizations who benefit from the lessons only nature can provide.

Over the three years we have started four additional school gardens in Henderson County, due in large part to funding from Dogwood Health Trust. Each school has its own individual needs, but the common denominator is the children and their connection to nature.

Growing Young Sprouts Sensory Garden:

Transforming the backyard at Children & Family Resource Center has been a dream come true. The area is inviting for children of all ages to explore nature using all their senses. Over the past two years, COME has been awarded grant funding from the Four Seasons Rotary Club of Henderson County, along with other individual donations to turn an area prone to flooding into a wonderful garden with french drains all around! Again, the transformation has been in collaboration with a leadership team of staff and volunteers and a very generous landscaper willing to provide countless hours to create magic in the garden.

Partnership with Historic Johnson Farm and the Migrant Education Program:

Over the years, we have been fortunate to win a grant each year from the Community Foundation of Henderson County for camperships for 10 students within the Migrant Education Program. Collaboration with all parties has created a rich experience for young students to enjoy farm life and explore nature.

What’s Next for Caregivers of Mother Earth?

We continue to collaborate with community partners and dream big! One example recently, when we asked how COME could expand our outreach to more students, a Principal from one of our elementary school garden clubs suggested we create lesson plans tied to NC Standards by grade to make it seamless for teachers to explore outdoor lessons with their classes. Possibilities abound as children are eager to get outdoors and explore, connect, and observe nature!

CELEBRATING EARTH DAY FOR OVER 50 YEARS

Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22 in the US since 1970. By the turn of the century, it had grown to include over 140 countries worldwide, all celebrating the movement. Caregivers of Mother Earth wants to raise awareness of environmental health issues and their impact on all species of life. Let’s join together as we learn and celebrate ways to Make Earth Day Every Day.

FACT 1: GROWING YOUR DINNER

Did you know that a garden has the power to change the world? They can even pave the path to victory!
During the 1940s, families planted Victory Gardens in their front yards, window boxes, and even rooftops to help feed everyone at home.
By 1944, Victory Gardens produced 40% of all vegetables grown in the United States.
The best part? They have the power to change the world again! Try planting a Climate Victory Garden to help reduce carbon and make dinner much more fun!

FACT 2: FOR CLEANER WATERS & A HEALTHIER EARTH

The average person uses 13 plastic water bottles enough, that is 150 bottles a year, ending up in our waters and landfills.
Most of your plastics are not recycled. In the United States, only about 23% is recycled with 32% ending up in the oceans.
Other plastics and litter don’t even make it to the recycling bin, instead contributing to stormwater runoff pollution as litter is left on the ground and finds its way to the water.
What can you do? Phase out single-use plastics: bring your reusable bags to the grocery store, invest in a water filter for home, use reusable water bottles, and grow ocean-friendly gardens that star native plants and organic soil.

FACT 3: PROBLEM WITH PLASTIC

Do you know where your trash goes? About 11 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year.
This means that plastic is polluting our waters, endangering ocean ecosystems, and affecting human health as it takes anywhere from 20 to 500 years to break down.
Even then, plastic never fully disappears but becomes microplastic, which is the biggest concern.
For human health, consuming microplastics can negatively impact child development, the nervous system, and even the lungs.

FACT 4: CHASING BUTTERFLIES

Have you ever heard of the monarch butterfly?
The monarch is a migratory butterfly native to North America, meaning that it moves as the seasons change: resting in Mexico during the winter and traveling to the United States and Canada in time for spring!
Since the 1990s, the monarch population has decreased by approximately 90% because of habitat destruction
But there are you can protect the monarch, like planting milkweed native to your home and learning much more about our flying friends

FACT 5: YOU HOLD THE KEY

Earth fact: 14% of native plants support 90% of insect and bird species, making them a key to hold their respective ecosystems together

FACT 6: FLOWERING YOUR KNOWLEDGE

How often do you visit your local library?
Visiting your local library is so important, they provide you with access to information, ways to meet new people, and a safe place to go.
Access to information is so important, so you can learn more about the world and what is important to you. You could even find more ways to celebrate ‘Earth Day Every Day!’
The library is an important community resource that supports personal and collective health and development.

FACT 7: LISTENING TO TREES

Did you know that one large tree provides a day’s worth of clean air for 4 people to breathe? --Arbor Day Foundation
This means less pollution and more oxygen in the air, which is super important for the environment and people alike.
Trees help the environment by fighting climate change, with an adult tree absorbing more than 48 pounds of carbon dioxide each year to provide homes for birds and mammals.
Trees improve human health by providing oxygen we breathe and cleaning polluted air, letting us breathe in fresh air.

FACT 8: GREENER RIDES & HAPPIER FEET

Choosing to bike or walk over a car just once a day reduces the average person’s carbon emissions from transportation by 67%, helping the Earth and your body!
Biking or walking instead of driving can help save the world as they...
Reduce emissions, resulting in cleaner air.
Combat noise pollution and less roadkill.
Keep land free for nature - 20 bikes can fit in the space of one car, requiring less land for parking lots.
Help support local businesses because you’re more likely to bike or walk closer to home.
Save lives and cut down on traffic.

FACT 9: RIDING TO THE FUTURE

Earth fact: For every 20 electric vehicles per 1,000 people in a zip code, asthma-related emergency room visits dropped 3.2% -Keck School of Medicine of USC
About 4.5 million children nationwide suffer from asthma, a condition that affects children of color and from lower income households more than any other population. The leading cause? Traffic pollution.
Electric vehicles have been proven to improve air quality, reducing the amount of nitrogen dioxide, a traffic pollutant linked to asthma and other respiratory diseases.
The switch to electric vehicles and other sustainable forms of transportation not only means cleaner air but also healthier bodies.

FACT 10: INVITING MAGIC

Have you seen any fairies flying by?
Not to be confused with a butterfly or bee, a garden fairy is a small flying friend looking for a home.
If you are willing, you can invite them to be your friends by planting them a garden growing native plants then building them a shelter with whatever you find at home!
Remember that fairies are small so you can grow your garden anywhere! Just get started and invite in the magic!

Looking Ahead to 2024 with Caregivers of Mother Earth (COME)

COME turned 2 years old on February 22, 2024, and her growth seems to be akin to dog years, (7 dog years for every human year!) Yes, that would position COME in adolescence! We’re full of life and ready to fly!

How have we been able to accomplish all we’ve done to this point in time? Only through community collaboration with a generous and heartfelt outpouring of support have we landed where we are today. The community has been our source of inspiration. Over the past 2 years we’ve been able to establish a foundation for growth and 2024 appears to be unfolding like the bud opening into a fully formed flower. It’s only been possible by getting to know and working with amazing people. Yes, that would include all of you reading this and so many more!

COME’s theme for 2024 is Make Every Day Earth Day . We will share ideas and ways for all ages to do their part as we kick it off at Hendo Earth Fest . Read more about our upcoming initiatives, events, and programs as we look ahead to 2024:

Second Annual Hendo Earth Fest - Make Every Day Earth Day

Coming up on April 20th, the city of Hendersonville in conjunction with the Environmental Sustainability Board, Team E.C.C.O., and a sub-team of individuals and nonprofits, including Caregiver of Mother Earth are coordinating and planning our second Hendo Earth Fest event. It will take place on Main Street in downtown Hendersonville, NC.
In our first year, we exceeded expectations for attendance and we heard excellent reviews from vendors and participants alike. There was good diversity across all areas of environmental sustainability, covering areas from Electric Vehicles to Community Gardens. We’re building on last year’s performance with more vendors, kid’s activities, and a wonderful lineup of musicians.
New to the festival will be the introduction of educational, environmental signs with facts to raise awareness on ways to “ Make Every Day Earth Day.” You can click on a QR Code and dig deeper into each topic which ranges from bringing back monarchs to the importance of planting native keystone plants. The messages will appeal to all ages as we share the impact you can have from making small changes to supporting a clean and green community!
Come and enjoy the day as you experience family and kid-friendly eco-crafts and over 40 eco-friendly educational exhibits. The kids will enjoy face painting, environmental arts and crafts, and much more as we all do our part to live greener lives.

Eco Kids Garden Program

During the fall of 2022, COME organized a collaborative partnership between The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club and AJ Whittenberg Elementary School of Engineering to form a sustainable garden club for children. The name ECO Kids has significance as E-C-O stands for Education on Environmental Topics, Collaborative Partnerships, and Open to All! We’ve created a recipe for success as we move into our third season with the ECO Kids Garden Club .
Each club has its uniqueness based on volunteers, yet the common theme of what it means to be a Caregiver of Mother Earth is constant. We heard from the kids how much they enjoy planting and tasting fresh herbs and vegetables directly from the garden!
Building on the success of our first collaboration, COME has reached out to elementary schools in both Henderson and Polk Counties where we’ve had several responses to move forward! More to come as we create new ECO Kids Gardens.

Scholarships for Summer Farm & Nature Day Camps

In partnership with Historic Johnson Farm and the Migrant Education Program, COME is providing 10 children scholarships to attend Summer Day Camp in 2024. We intend to make opportunities for children who otherwise would not be able to attend camp. The children from last summer remarked that their favorite activities included time with the farm animals, nature crafts, and hiking. Thank you to the Community Foundation of Henderson County for funding this program!

Sensory Garden - Growing Young Sprouts in the Garden

Thanks to your generous donations and success with a grant from Four Seasons Rotary Club, COME has a new garden initiative we are calling, “ Growing Young Sprouts in the Garden .” We’ve purchased seed starting stations for indoor seed germination to show children how our plants begin from seeds and develop into their unique plants. As the seedlings grow, each child will have a plant to take home as well as help create the sensory garden.
Once outdoors we plan to create areas in the garden where children can use their imagination under the Fairy Tree or inside the Sunflower House. There will be a Three Sisters Garden with corn, beans, and squash where we can share how these crops work together and provide nourishment for our bodies.
Falling in love with the natural world begins early with this family-friendly garden, inviting children of all ages to learn and experience the beauty of our natural world.

Pollinator Garden Projects/COME Cities

Our cornerstone COME City, Hendersonville, NC and our second COME City, Travelers Rest are continuing to raise awareness of the importance of living sustainable lives in alignment with nature. Pollinator gardens, environmental school programs, expanding nature trails and educational signs and literature is being made available in these communities.
One amazing fact everyone should know is that 14% of the keystone native trees, shrubs and perennial flowers support over 90% of insect and bird species while strengthening the web of life.

Caregivers of Mother Earth is founded on values that demonstrate kindness and compassion for all life.

Finding balance in our world today may be as easy as looking to nature as our guide. I often reflect on the quote from Lao Tzu, “Nature does not hurry yet everything is accomplished.” Caregivers of Mother Earth dreams of a world where communities value time spent in nature, allowing children to discover a world of wonderment! Nature created everything with its own purpose. Scientists now show we are connected in a web of life. Showing reverence for all life forms is critical as we raise our consciousness to higher levels.

All life is sacred.

We now realize our dependency on nature for our needs, yet many still act as if we are the ones whom nature relies upon. It’s time to awaken and show reverence for all life. Outdoor classrooms are gaining popularity as parents realize the need for their children to form a deep understanding and connection to the natural world through imagination and exploration. Creative thinking is ignited while playing outdoors. Many benefits accrue, including self- confidence and independence.

Children who experience the wonders of nature form memories that last a lifetime. Our hope is that future choices will be made that consider our impact on the environment.Small changes can reap large rewards. In the book by Doug Tallamy, Nature’s Best Hope,outlines simple changes that when collectively implemented can go a long way to reversing the trends causing species loss. Some of his changes include, adding native plants to your landscape, reducing lawns by creating pollinator gardens, and switching out white LED outside l ighting for yellow LED bulbs!

We are all one in the web of life.

Plants and animals are in a symbiotic dance of life as the air we breathe comes from the plants and our out-breath returns back to them. This relationship requires balance between nature and ourselves. As we observe nature’s cycles, we can find balance. Once restored, we will be drawn to Mother Earth as our guide. Live in connection with nature and observe her cycles. Come together as one, knowing that Mother Earth will provide our every need. Treat her and all life with reverence. Have fearless faith and believe that as humans find balance so will Mother Earth. May we go forward and celebrate every day as Earth Day!

Reflections: Our First Year

Please join me as I look back at Caregivers of Mother Earth and why our mission is so critical for both our children and Mother Earth.

We’ve heard the numbers about the hours children are on technology each day. Children are

growing up too fast and losing their childhood wonderment. Support Caregivers of Mother Earth

as we touch children’s lives and teach them about our Mother Earth. It’s never too late to dream

big for the future.

May Day!

The alarm has been sounded! Time spent on technology screens has skyrocketed and outdoor

playtime is being eclipsed right before our eyes.

Children are growing up too fast and losing their childhood innocence. Terms like ‘Nature Deficit

Disorder’ now capture a generation of children with little hands-on playtime in our natural world.

Our mission is to work with children and help connect them with nature. You protect what you

care for and falling in love with nature as a young child is a great place to start.

Becoming Caregivers of Mother Earth

Heading into our second year, I dream about what may come from the seeds we planted last year and all the learnings we’ve discovered along the way. It’s not enough to plant a garden. Children need to understand how we are all connected in the web of life. That’s why we share social and emotional learning as a part of our programs. We are calling it Environmental Educational Enrichment. Most encouraging from last year are all the resources available for parents and teachers. Least encouraging is the time it has taken us to discover these resources. While there is a vast quantity of excellent materials, they are fragmented in pockets that have taken considerable time to identify and catalog.

Dream Big

Our mantra for Caregivers of Mother Earth is to collaborate and COME Together. Many hands

make the load light! Our Chief Fairy Godmother for Caregivers of Mother Earth has been busy creating an umbrella

of resources for parents and teachers to have ready access. She has devised a catalog system

based on key topics of learning that will save countless hours of research. She also has

placeholders for age-appropriate activities on each topic for children from Kindergarten through

5th grade.
